So you want to quit your job?

a few questions to ask before diving into a new career

Some of the most talked about buzz words right now are pivot and career transition. Why? With all of the uncertainty around us, it is hard to not think about what a different job or career might be like.

My recommendation…

before you send your goodbye emails…

take time to research exactly what you might be getting yourself into.

Start with someone who is actually doing your dream job.

Ask an expert.

Find these experts through your LinkedIn contacts, alumni directories or by asking around… let people know you are interested in learning more about a particular company or industry.

At this point, they don’t need to know why… it is more important that they will connect you with someone who does a job close to what you hope to do.

Questions to ask your dream job expert

(Pro tip: ask if you can record the conversation for your own use or take lots of notes)

Why did you choose you job? How did you start in this line of work?

How did you get here? What experience, education, networking or connection led you to this position.

What do you love most about your job?

What do you wish was better or different?

How has the job changed since you started?

Finally, what advice would you give to someone considering this job for themselve?

Don’t forget to send a thank you email or message to thank them for their time. They may just end up being on a hiring team for you someday and polite business practices really make a difference in a competitive career market.
